How to Manage Books with Multiple Income Streams

Service four

Running More Than One Business? Don’t Mix the Books. Seriously.

Got multiple businesses under your belt? Maybe you’re running a consulting LLC by day and shipping out orders from your e-commerce shop by night. First of all—go you! But here’s the golden rule that’ll save your sanity (and maybe your liability):

Each business entity needs its own set of books. Period.

If you’ve got multiple EINs (Employer Identification Numbers), that’s the IRS’s way of saying, “Hey, these are completely separate businesses.” That means separate bookkeeping systems, separate bank accounts, separate everything.

Think of each business like a roommate. Sure, you might share the same roof, but everyone still needs their own fridge shelf and bathroom drawer. Blending finances between businesses is like mixing up everyone’s groceries and hoping no one notices—messy, confusing, and someone’s definitely going to get cranky.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Legal protection: Commingling finances can pierce your corporate veil—meaning you could lose that sweet liability protection you set up in the first place.
  • IRS red flags: Mixing money between entities can invite audits or complicated tax issues (and no one wants that).
  • Better decision-making: You need clear, clean books for each business to know what’s working, what’s not, and where to grow

Each business should have its own:

  • Bank accounts
  • Credit cards
  • Accounting software or files
  • Expense tracking
  • Revenue recording

And yes, that means reviewing each set of books separately every month. Each one deserves its own P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow review. It’s not just smart—it’s legally required.

When tax season hits, each business files its own return. If you’ve kept your books clean and separate, this part becomes a breeze instead of a caffeine-fueled scramble.

Need help untangling your businesses or setting things up the right way from the start? I’ve got you.
